Why kids should learn to play tennis

Congratulations
to you for giving your child a wonderful gift:
The Chance to Learn and Enjoy Playing Tennis for Lifetime.
One of the best long lasting presents parents can give to their child is
to let their kid learn the game that can be played for a lifetime.
Tennis is such a sport game!

There are a lot of the public sports games exist, but few of them are played by so
many people in all ages in many countries.
Most of the sport games required the special scheduling to accommodate the participation
of many people grouped in the team.
Tennis is the game played by all ages and two to four players are only required to have a game.

Here is the proof in your area that the tennis is the lifetime game:
Visit Pikesville Middle School tennis courts on the weekends’ mornings, or Pikesville High School tennis courts on the weekdays’ mornings to see the tennis games. The tennis players are the senior citizens of 70 to 84 ages old. Visit local indoor tennis facilities. You will see the seniors enjoy tennis games. Most of them started to play at age of 4 to 8, and some learned to play tennis at age of 30 - 50 when their children started to play. You might see a player of 65 and up age old enjoying the tennis game with the kid of 6 and up years old.

Here are the quotes from US Professional Tennis Association Little Tennis:
Tennis players score higher in vigor, optimism, and self-esteem, and lower in depression, anger, confusion, anxiety, and tension than other athletes and non-athletes.
(Dr. Joan Finn and colleagues at Southern Connecticut University)

Tennis outperforms golf, running, weight-lifting, and many other sports in developing positive personality characteristics like sociability, mental focus, competitiveness, adventurousness, spontaneity, creativity, and assertiveness.
(Dr. Jim Galvin, author of The Exercise Habit)

The average person burns more calories playing tennis than doing low impact aerobics, weightlifting, riding a stationary bike, hiking, walking a golf course, or playing softball, baseball, or volleyball. "http://www.nutristrategy.com"www.nutristrategy.com

Over 20% of children ages 6-18 are overweight, and that number has increased 200% over the
past 3 decades.  A recent study by the National Association for Sports & Physical Education
showed that physically fit children performed better academically.
Tennis is one of the few sports that can be played for a lifetime and uniquely
benefits children like no other sport.
Through tennis kids gain both physical and psychological benefits.

“Little Tennis is a great way to introduce children to tennis, the sport for a lifetime,"
says Tim Heckler, CEO of USPTA. "Whatever a child’s age, tennis offers physical
and social benefits to help them develop throughout their childhood, and beyond."

You, as the parent of the Tennis Kid, have the great possibility to learn and e njoy playing tennis for many years
by practicing the tennis drills with your child from beginning. Learning to play tennis is ongoing process. The kids
love to play the games with their parents. That is your chance to learn the game that you can play with your child
as long as you can play. Do not miss this opportunity!

Tips for Parents

Parent Tennis Tips

Tennis is not an easy game to learn.
Your child will be in the process of learning to like to play tennis.
Create his/her positive attitude to tennis.
Your encouragement will help your child to learn to like tennis.

The drills we will do “develop the essential motor skill activities: walking, running, hopping, skipping, catching, throwing, kicking, striking and … etc. They will also help to develop Body Balance, Control and Coordination of Body Movement, Hand –Eye Coordination, Stimulation of Mental Functioning, Physical Conditions, Control, Consistency, Patience, Good Listening Skills and Following Directions.
Tennis stimulates the mind, body, and emotions and fosters cooperative and competitive skills development.
In fact, a number of studies indicate that tennis cuts the risk of heart disease: helps foster sociability, mental focus, teamwork, and discipline: is great stress reducer, and burns more calories than many other popular sports. The beauty of tennis is that it is free of limitations based on gender, physical size, and age.” (USTA)  Please practice the drills with your child at home.

The classes will be oriented to develop the tennis fundamentals.
Most of the time during the first lessons will be spent on the variety of
the simple ball catching and throwing drills and we will use easy bounce big tennis balls.
Please practice the drills with your child with such balls.

Let your child to bring the racket to the lesson. Let your kid have own racket.  Do not give him old one of yours.  Please read the guidelines”How to Choose the Right Tennis Racquet for Junior Player”.

Ask your child to teach you tennis drills that learned at the lessons and spend 10-15 min a day
practicing them with your kid. Be a student of your kid.
Let your child to have a fun. Help your child to learn to play tennis.

You are welcome to be present at the lesson from the start to the end to assist the instructor.
Please do not enter the court in the middle of the lesson. Wait the end of the lesson outside of the court.

Do not force your child to practice or play tennis. That might create a child’s negative attitude to tennis.

Do not advise the instructor how to teach tennis to your child, but rather follow the instructor’s directions.

We have strict safety behavior rules at the tennis lessons.
The accidental hitting and falling are rare during the tennis lessons, but it might happen. Instruct your child to have good manners on the court.  The players have the rackets that they will swing.

How to Choose the Right Tennis Racquet For Junior Player.

You might see tennis racquets of many shapes, of many manufactures in the stores and with the amassing gap in the prices. The industry produced the big variety of the racquets to satisfy the army of the players with the different: grips, stile of the play, completion, highs, agility, strength and so on. Do not lose yourself trying to choose the right racquet for your kid. The industry did not produce huge variety of the racquet for the junior tennis players.
Here are the guidelines to choose the right racquets for your child.

Racquet length: 19” for 1 to 4 years old; 21” for 4-6 years old, 23” for 7- 9 years old,
25” for 8 to 10 years old, 26”- 27” for 10 -12 years old.
Weight of the racquet: the junior tennis racquets are very light. You will locate such racquet among many racquets easy.

Here is the test to help your kid to get right racquet with the right weight and length:
Let your child to hold a racquet and bring it behind him so that the racquet touches his/her low back. The elbow of the kid should be the highest part of the raised arm (the part of the serving motion).
Let him raise the racquet overhead in slow motion
It is right racquet for a child if it is not heavy for him/her.

Right grip. The industry did not produce big variety of the grips for the junior racquets. But here is the general guideline to choose racquet with the correct grip for a player. Hold the handle of the racquet. The grip is correct if the player has the index finger wide space between the tips of the fingers and the edge of the palm. Child should place his/her index finger in this space to check it. Choose a racquet with the smaller grip if spacing is wider than the finger wide. Avoid buying the racquet with the wide grip – it would be difficult and not save for a child to play with it.
Be careful: do not buy the racquetball racquet instead of the tennis racquet.

Where to buy the racquet.
You can buy junior racquet in our area in such store as Target, Wall Mart, Modell’s Sport and Sport Authorities. Ask for a responsible store clerk’s help if you have the difficulties to choose right racquet for your child.

I might purchase Wilson junior racquets for you (19”, 21”, 23”, 25” and 27”) if you have the difficulties to purchase it. The test on the weight of the racquet will be missed and the purchase would be final. The cost of the racquet would be $17 plus shipping, if the price has not increased recently. Please, let me know it right away to minimize the shipping cost. But do check the local store for the cost of racquet, especially Target.
